About the Role

Our client is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems supporting new products, partner integrations, market expansion, and regulatory initiatives. This is a full-time, contract-to-hire opportunity based in Toronto, Canada, with a strong stated likelihood of conversion to a permanent role.

A primary focus will be integrating an existing background-check system with a new vendor. You’ll work directly with vendor engineers to understand APIs, communicate technical and feature needs, resolve blockers, and deliver a reliable compliance-focused integration. You’ll also collaborate with internal engineering and cross-functional teams to balance technical investments with business and regulatory priorities.

Core Attributes

  • Backend Systems Depth: You can design, build, debug, and improve scalable backend services and distributed systems.

  • Technical Ownership: You’re comfortable taking projects from early design through implementation, deployment, and ongoing improvement.

  • Partner Collaboration: You can work directly with external technical partners, clarify requirements, and proactively remove blockers.

  • Reliability Mindset: You understand how to build and operate fault-tolerant, highly available systems at scale.

  • Code Quality: You write readable, maintainable, well-tested code and contribute thoughtfully to code reviews.

  • Practical Problem-Solving: You can balance architectural quality, delivery needs, compliance requirements, and business priorities.

  • Knowledge Sharing: You communicate technical ideas clearly through documentation, discussions, code reviews, and team learning.

  • Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize large-scale, highly available systems.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams on initiatives supporting business growth, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
